Hob machines are characterized by the largest module or pitch diameter it can generate. For example, a 10 in (250 mm) capacity machine can generate gears with a 10 in pitch diameter and usually a maximum of a 10 in face width. Most hob machines are vertical hobbers, meaning the blank is mounted vertically.
Hob machines provide gear manufacturers a fast and accurate method for cutting parts. This is because of the generating nature of this particular cutting process. Gear hob is not a form cutting process, such as gashing or milling where the cutter is a conjugate form of the gear tooth.
Development of Gear Hob Fixture Design for Reduction
During manufacturing of gears on Hob machine, the time taken for the setting of the hob fixture was very high. Whenever a gear of a new Root Diameter is to be manufactured, old fixture has to be removed & the relevant new fixture has to be installed. For changing of the fixture on the gear hob machine the time required was found out
For spur gears, set the hob head at the swivel angle as marked. Right hand hob goes one way, left hand the other. What you are trying to achieve is a rack parallel to the face of the gear so a right-hand hob on yours would be tilted to the right, a left-hand hob to the left. Check me on this, sometimes my brain goes astray.
